Welcome Message from the CEO
Dear Carbon Removal Community,
Welcome to the inaugural Spiritus newsletter for Q3 2024. The purpose of this newsletter now and going forward is to share a deeper level of updates for interested buyers in the CDR market for the purpose of building trust within the market and to share development progress on our way to megatonne scale. It will not be all rainbows and butterflies, nor should it be - developing technology is hard. Developing DAC is really, really hard. But we’re proud of the progress we’ve made to date and confident in our abilities to continue to knock down technical and commercial milestones.
Going forward we will release this newsletter on a quarterly basis to share the latest wins and learnings from our sorbent, engineering, and corporate progress. We will also introduce you to some of the amazing team members behind Spiritus from time to time as a way to put a human face behind the incredible work being done and to celebrate the incredible team we’ve put together. We encourage each of you to reach out anytime a question comes up - our team is here to help. We hope you find this newsletter useful and we look forward to the exciting engagement we hope it spurs.
Best regards,
Charles Cadieu, CEO

Spiritus Highlights
Spiritus Milestones Look Back:
Sorbent
We successfully demonstrated a 13% reduction in the desorption temperature, validating several assumptions in our cost model on the way to $100/t.
Engineering
Successful deployment of v3 of our lab scale demonstrator (internally referred to as DOC) for demonstration for independent technical evaluation. These demonstrations provide invaluable insights into our engineering and sorbent performance as we progress to larger systems.
Corporate
Our Class VI well permit has been submitted to the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality. This is a crucial step in our sequestration strategy. You can find the permit application here. We anticipate receiving the permit in the first half of 2025.
Spiritus Roadmap Look Forward:
Manufacturing: We’ve taken possession of our 37,000 sq ft manufacturing facility in Kansas City, Missouri. This facility provides the space to scale capacity alongside the engineering scale-up and will eventually enable commercial-scale production sorbent to operate Orchard 1 in Wyoming.
Engineering: Sorbent durability continues to be a focal point of our R&D efforts and the sorbent continues to beat the milestones we put in front of it. We will push durability tests even further over the remainder of the year by increasing the number of cycles by 25%. This would represent a 5x increase in the demonstrated durability of the sorbent from where we started 2024.
Corporate: We are in the midst of our first offtake campaign - where we aim to secure several offtake agreements with buyers for announcement during Earth Week 2025. Our commercial efforts will be focused on this over the next 8 months and we look forward forward to sharing on our progress in our Q4 update.
These milestones bring us closer to achieving our goal of first deliveries in 2026.
Achievements & Awards
Spiritus was honored with the Technology Transfer Excellence Award at the Richard P. Feynman Center for Innovation's Outstanding Innovation Celebration on Tuesday, September 3, 2024. This prestigious award recognizes Spiritus's exceptional contributions to advancing technology and innovation. Co-founder and former Los Alamos National Lab scientist Matt Lee accepted the award on behalf of Spiritus.
Team Spotlight:
Mindy Ren - Head of Carbon Renewal Infrastructure
We are excited to highlight Mindy Ren, one of Spiritus’s talented engineers. Mindy has been a key player in advancing our technological capabilities, contributing to breakthrough solutions in carbon sequestration and emissions reductions. With a background in environmental engineering and sustainable energy systems, her expertise has helped elevate Spiritus’s engineering processes, making us a leader in the climate technology space.
What inspired your transition from your previous roles at leading tech companies to focusing on climate change and carbon removal efforts?
My journey began with a deep concern for our planet and a desire to make a meaningful impact. Witnessing the urgent need to address climate change and the limited progress being made, I felt compelled to take action. I realized that carbon removal technologies could be a crucial part of the solution. The potential impact and benefits they offer motivated me to shift my focus. Tackling climate change isn't a leisurely pursuit; it's an urgent necessity, akin to exploring new energy sources like oil and gas, developing renewable energy, or advancing battery technology. We need to rapidly deploy carbon removal solutions. Spiritus is a significant player in this field, and I'm eager to contribute to its efforts and drive this critical work forward.
How do you see Direct Air Capture (DAC) shaping the future of climate solutions?
DAC is a game-changer. By actively capturing atmospheric CO₂, it offers a tangible pathway to remove emissions and stabilize Earth's climate. Unlike other strategies that focus solely on reducing emissions, DAC directly captures CO₂ from the open air, regardless of the emission source. This makes it a powerful tool for addressing both historical and future emissions. In my view, DAC is the most impactful and verifiable way to tackle climate change directly.
Since joining the climate tech industry, what unexpected insights or experiences have you encountered that have shaped your perspective on this work?
Great question! A key to success is collaboration across all sectors—technology, policy, investments, finance, government, local communities, and execution partners. A collaborative mindset is essential to drive progress. Perfection is the enemy of progress. No one will get it right the first time, but with collaboration and an enabling mindset, we can make it work. I invite everyone to join us in driving this change.
